Grading the 2015 Atlanta Braves Trades by Joel SChafer

JAN 1 Atlanta Braves traded LHP Chasen Shreve and RHP David Carpenter to New York Yankees for LHP Manny Banuelos.

Chasen Shreve looks to be a reliever of the future for the pinstripes while Carpenter seems to be a throw in member of the trade. Manny has struggled mightily going 1-4 with a 5.50 era. for Atlanta. Manny is just 24..  Grade C-

JAN 8 Atlanta Braves traded 3B Kyle Kubitza and Nate Hyatt to Los Angeles Angels for LHP Ricardo Sanchez.

Kyle Kubitza is what I would call a AAA+ player meaning he will be a guy that will be good in triple a and struggle in the majors. Kyle  batted .305 at his best in any level of baseball. Nate Hyatt excelled in  rookie ball and was promoted to class A Rome in 2013 but has struggled A+ ball the past 2 season. Sanchez is an 18-year-old prospect  playing at Rome A this year and has a long ways to go. Grade:C

jan 14 Atlanta Braves traded DH Evan Gattis and RHP James Hoyt to Houston Astros for RHP Mike Foltynewicz, 3B Rio Ruiz and RHP Andrew Thurman.

Gattis along with his power brought a lot of strikeouts. Gattis  fits the American league  with the DH as he was a liability in the field.  I am not sure to what to make of Hoyt.  Mike Foltynewicz has shown some promise in the majors this year there are talks that he may become the closer. Rio Ruiz has never hit higher than .271  (rookie all). Thurman has promoted twice this year  currently is in double A where he needs some time. Grade: C

JAN 23 Atlanta Braves traded LHP Hector Daniel Rodriguez to Baltimore Orioles for cash.

There is not much to see here  Grade B

JAN 30 Atlanta Braves traded RHP David Hale and RHP Gus Schlosser to Colorado Rockies for C Jose Briceno and C Chris O’Dowd.

Hale has struggled in the thin air, He is a 4th in the rotation type of guy. Gus would be served well to go to the bullpen.  D can hit a little bit and Briceno is nowhere close. We gave up 2 arms for 2 marginal catchers. Grade F.

FEB 6 Atlanta Braves traded 3B Edward Salcedo to Pittsburgh Pirates for RHP Bryton Trepagnier.

Salcedo is going nowhere, Bryton may have an upside in the pen. Grade B

MAR 21 Arizona Diamondbacks traded RHP Sean Furney to Atlanta Braves for cash.

Maybe the coaching can help him become a marginal player. Grade:C

APR 03 Arizona Diamondbacks traded cash and RHP Trevor Cahill to Atlanta Braves for LF Josh Elander.  Cahill was terrible for the Braves and Elander was not much Grade F (on both sides)

APR 05 Atlanta Braves traded RHP Craig Kimbrel and Melvin Upton Jr. to San Diego Padres for CF Cameron Maybin, LF Carlos Quentin, LF Jordan Paroubeck and RHP Matt Wisler.

Kimbrel is a stud and it was had to see go Melvin/BJ Upton was maybe the worst player that the Braves have ever signed. He was a cancer to the clubhouse and showed little effort while not hitting above the Mendoza line most of the time he was here. Cameron Maybin is a surprise and has been the best braves player this year. Matt Wisler is promising young Pitcher that will be good.  Paroubeck was traded to the dodgers for the 87th overall pick and Quentin retired. Grade A+

May 20 Atlanta Braves traded RHP John Cornely to Boston Red Sox for cash.

We got cash for a guy going nowhere Grade B

may 27 Los Angeles Dodgers traded 3B Juan Uribe and RHP Chris Withrow to Atlanta Braves for 3B Alberto Callaspo, LHP Eric Stults, LHP Ian Thomas and RHP Juan Jaime.

Braves needed help at third base with Chris Johnson being a pain in the butt for the clubhouse and Callaspo being old and Uribe being old.   Braves gave up Ian Thomas and Juan Jaime neither guy is a world beater. Chris Withrow has promise when he plays again. Grade B (contingent on Withrow panning out)

june 20 Arizona Diamondbacks traded RHP Bronson Arroyo and RHP Touki Toussaint to Atlanta Braves for 3B Phil Gosselin.  Phil is a Platoon guy Bronson was just a piece of paper part of the trade and Toussaint needs to excel soon. Grade C

July 2  Atlanta Braves traded RHP Cody Martin to Oakland Athletics for Other Considerations.

Martin for International talents to be signed later? I will take that. Grade A

July 2 Atlanta traded RHP Caleb Dirks and LF Jordan Paroubeck to Los Angeles Dodgers for Other Considerations.

This was for the #87 pick and cash to sign international players without luxury tax penalties. Grade A

July 2 Atlanta Braves traded RHP Garrett Fulenchek to Tampa Bay Rays for Other Considerations.

Fulenchek for international signing is a win. Grade A

July 6 Atlanta Braves traded RHP Aaron Kurcz to Oakland Athletics for Future Considerations.

Braves needed the money Grade A
July 30 Atlanta Braves traded LHP Alex Wood, RHP Jim Johnson, LHP Luis Avilan, 2B Jose Peraza, RHP Bronson Arroyo and cash to Los Angeles Dodgers for 2B Hector Olivera, LHP Paco Rodriguez and RHP Zack Bird.

This trade is essentially Alex wood for Hector Olivera. Alex has the potential to be an Ace. Olivera has talent but not the type you trade for a potential ace. Grade F

August 7  Atlanta Braves traded 3B Chris Johnson to Cleveland Indians for CF Michael Bourn, LF Nick Swisher and cash.

There was not much to lose here. Bourn is having a down year, Cleveland is paying most of B and Swisher’s salary and you get rid of a fester club house sore spot in Johnson. I like how Swisher plays when healthy. Bourn should be DFAed. Grade A

August 31 Atlanta Braves traded cash and LF Jonny Gomes to Kansas City Royals for SS Luis Valenzuela.

Gomes couldn’t hit his weight for the Braves.  Grade A
