Today is a day for all Star Wars fans to celebrate the great Sci-Fi, Action/Adventure brain child of George Lucas that has woven its way into pop culture like a seamstress weaves a pattern into a beautiful quilt. Ever since I can remember there were Star Wars lunch boxes, thermoses, action figures and the three iconic movies that I still never miss and watch like each time is the first time. I mean for those of you that are fans like me who can forget classic lines like “Let go Luke use the force”, or “No I am your father”, to “You have failed me for the last time” the last one I will admit is a personal favorite of mine. I’m sure just as I’m quoting different lines from the first three movies you can conjure some of your own in your head as you continue to read my fellow fan of the force.
Just when we thought the first three movies were all we had to go on there were so many questions remaining. For instance, if Darth Vader was Luke’s father what was he like as a Jedi? What could’ve caused him to go down that dark path which led to the first three movies being made? Plus I’m sure there were many others, but George Lucas attempted to appease us Star Wars fans with the Phantom Menace in 1999 which delves into the history of Anakin Skywalker as a kid. If you’re as much of a fan as I am while it was cool to see Yoda in CGI, and that Lando Calrissian wasn’t the only brother in the Galaxy because Mace Windu was a bonafide Jedi Master, there were so many holes and let downs dare I say the name Jar Jar Binks? Go ahead and get that bad taste out of your mouth because as the story shifted away from the basics and more into the meat and potatoes of the story Episode II Attack of the Clones had classic scenes like my favorite Yoda vs Count Dooku on Geonosis. One of my questions was how much of a bad ass was Yoda actually, and if the multi-centuries old Jedi Master could hold his own with a Sith Lord clearly he was a beast as a youngster. The big letdown for me was that ultimately the Chosen One of the Jedi was portrayed as a whiny, ungrateful brat that didn’t fully appreciate the gifts that had been bestowed on him nor did he heed the wise counsel of his master.
The end of Skywalker saga was Episode III: Revenge of the Sith where we see Skywalker go down a path from respected Jedi hero to becoming the pawn of Darth Sidious for pretty much the rest of his miserable life. Much like the previous two movies there were awesome things like the scene where Obi Wan Kenobi battles General Grevious and the wily and spry old veteran Master Yoda battling Darth Sidious in a lightside vs darkside showdown for the ages. There were however more let downs which were some of the same ungratefulness of Anakin more of his whining and a rather quick transition to the darkside that left many questions unanswered. That being said if any of those movies come on no matter how much we complain all fans of the force will watch the movies regardless whenever they come on!
Thankfully there are many other mediums that we are provided with like the great computer animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars which really fills in a lot of the gaps from the last three movies. Plus there are tons of books that I own as I’m sure plenty of you do as well that fill in even more gaps so at the end of the day the story is completed one way or another. On a personal note if you’re a true fan of the force if you don’t have any books from James Luceno do yourself a favor and get a couple copies. In addition to the books and cartoon series there are also video games like Star Wars: Force Unleashed, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic which take you through different storylines in the Star Wars Universe to keep your plate full.
Our plates may need to get a little bigger force fans because J.J. Abrams has been tasked with taking us through a new timeline on the big screen in 2015! If that’s not good enough, Mark Hamil, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher are back to play their iconic roles yet again! Will it be good or will it be awful as we try to see in the force. However as Master Yoda has said cloudy the future is the darkside shrouds everything. I can only hope that Abrams will do what he did for the Star Trek series and give us the story and plot we’ve truly missed while the series was under George Lucas to go along with the awesome special effects to make these next movies give us more reasons to celebrate this awesome Star Wars Day, and as I sign off force fans I say again May the 4th be with you always! I leave you with some of my favorite scenes from the movies.
